Enhancing Shear and Bearing Strength of Wood I-joistsCompleted

Objective:

Develop improved I-joist details that will prevent pre-mature ‘knife-through’ bearing failure at joist end, and develop a calculation tool for I-joist producers to predict strengths of I-joists with holes in the webs. This research will:

  • Improve the design of a value-added wood product leading to enhanced performance in service;
    Understand the influence of web-flange joint profile on bearing strength of I-joist, leading to optimum profile and material selection;
  • Determine the influence web hole shape and size on strengths of I-joist;
  • Develop a model for predicting strength of I-joist with a web opening.
