Treated Wood Products Opportunities in the United StatesCompleted

Project leaders: Gaston, Chris

Objective:

Two studies were performed for the Value to Wood Program in 2004/05 relating to treated wood: “Potential for Increased Treated Wood Products Usage in U.S. South Residential Contruction” and “Consumer Preferences for Decking Products in North America”. Both these studies indicated that “attitudes are possibly ahead of behaviour”, and suggested that industry consider growing one market while working to maintain the other. As a result, this project is being implemented to improve market share.

  • Identify the barriers and challenges to increasing the use of treated framing wood products, including willingness to pay;
  • Identify what it would take for wood-composite products to succeed in capturing market share, or conversely, what the wood products’ industry can do to maintain its current market share
