Development of Standards for Edge-Glued and Face-Glued Engineered ProductsCompleted

Project leaders: Pirvu, Ciprian

The Canadian solid wood products industry has indicated an urgency for developing a national Standard which would permit the use of non-marketable short pieces and low-grade or low-value lumber in the production of longer and wider wood products of greater commercial value. The primary appeal of this Standard is the ability to produce a wide and long length structural product and have design values assigned on the basis of the visual grade. Although the NLGA and the Canadian Lumber Standards Accreditation Board (CLSAB) have approved a version of SPS 6 for use, there are a number of restrictions in the Standard that the industry would like the committee to reconsider. Removal of these restrictions would help to further reduce the cost of producing an SPS 6-type product.

  • investigate if and how the restrictions imposed on the requirements of the proposed NLGA SPS 6 Standard can be relaxed, and provide technical data to support the use of visual grading; and
  • examine the relationship between the raw material quality and the quality of wide edge-glued products (SPS 6-type product).
