Optimized Design of Wood I-JoistsCompleted

Objective:

Wood I-joist production in North America has increased ten-fold in the last ten years. Continued product performance improvements and lowering production costs are key to maintaining competitiveness and expanding into new markets. This project will generate technical information to assist the industry to address these challenges.

  • Evaluate the component (flange and web) material specifications currently used by the industry and recommend possible changes leading to material cost saving without negative impacts on common design floor spans;
  • Develop an optimized flange-web joint profile that is less prone to producing manufacturing defects and able to maintain design capacities; and
  • Evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of improving I-joists’ design properties by reinforcing flanges with selected reinforcement material.
