Combined Thermal/Chemical Modification of Wood to Enhance Exterior PerformanceCompleted

Project leaders: Cooper, Paul

Objective:

This project is designed to investigate the potential for combined thermal modification (enhanced decay resistance and dimensional stability through the impermeable heartwood) with chemical modification of the more permeable sapwood and outer heartwood using a reactive vegetable oil.

This project will determine the nature of the chemical reactions and the variables affecting it and to optimize the combined thermal/chemical treatment for efficiency of treatment, quality of treated product and total process cost.
