Baltic Birch (Russian or Finnish Birch) plywood use is widespread among Canadian engineered wood flooring (EWF) manufacturers. The substrate yields a high quality product that sets Canadian manufacturers apart from the rest in the Canadian and American markets. The product does have disadvantages: 1) it has many users, which pushes up the price; 2) availability is limited; 3) sellers require annual volume agreements; and 4) the product is imported exclusively via container lots.
EWF producers would like a Canadian solution to these disadvantages. The goal of this project is therefore to develop an economically viable substrate from solid wood sticks for engineered wood floor strips with a comparable performance to European plywoods.
