University of New Brunswick
The University of New Brunswick is the only university in Atlantic Canada that holds a concentration of strength in value-added wood products research. Expertise at the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management encompasses a broad range of disciplines, notably wood mechanics, engineered wood products, non-destructive testing, wood drying, adhesives and wood-polymer composites. Our Faculty members are active in the development of new technologies, and in codes and standards activities at the national and international levels. Our major wood research facilities are housed at the Wood Science and Technology Centre www.unbf.ca/forestry (WSTC), an off-campus research centre that plays a major role in supporting the innovation needs of the wood products industry in Atlantic Canada since 1988. WSTC undertakes proprietary and in-house research leading to new technologies that are transferred to manufacturers. Our facilities include dry kilns, a microwave wood drier, a full-scale structural system testing laboratory, a wood composite mini-production line, NDT equipment and a mechanical lumber grading machine. Our research programs place a strong emphasis on synergistic collaboration with other universities and research organizations. Current collaborators include Forintek Canada Corp, CSIRO (Australia), North Carolina State University (USA), Laval University, McGill University, University of Western Ontario and Concordia University.
